On December 30th, Sinopec, China’s petroleum giant, released its Sustainable Development Report on the “Belt and Road” Initiative in Algeria. This is the first sustainable development report published in Algeria, showcasing Sinopec’s commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities towards the local economy, security, environment, and society. The report also highlights the integration between China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative and Algeria’s “New Algeria” vision.
Algeria, the largest country in Africa by land area and the fourth largest economically, is an important partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Sinopec has embraced an “open cooperation, mutual benefit, and win-win” approach, developing a long-term, sustainable partnership that benefits the public. The company continues to balance its oil and gas exploration and development activities with environmental protection and societal progress.
Sinopec follows a “people-centered” approach, strictly adhering to Algeria’s security and environmental regulations, enhancing environmental management, and implementing green construction practices. Sinopec has made a donation of over 1 million Dinars to the China-Algeria Friendship Park and has engaged in eco-friendly activities such as voluntary tree planting. Additionally, the construction of a desert water pipeline in Algeria’s Tamanrasset region, which addresses the drinking water issues of 50,000 residents, has significantly contributed to Sino-Algerian cooperation and received the “Outstanding Contribution” award.
Sinopec also follows a strategy of “international talent, local employment” and provides approximately 1,000 direct or indirect jobs annually in Algeria. These employment opportunities not only contribute to the local community but also support investments in education, healthcare, and sports, fostering the development of society. Furthermore, water wells have been repaired in desert areas, providing clean drinking water to local communities, and cultural exchange events have been organized to strengthen the bond between the two countries.
Since the launch of the Belt and Road Initiative, Sinopec’s subsidiary in Algeria has successfully executed social responsibility projects, such as sending gifts to Algerian children during the school season and donating medical supplies to local hospitals. These projects have garnered wide recognition and high praise from the community.
