At the general meeting of the Shanghai delegation, Chen Zhongyi, a member of the National People’s Congress and an academic committee member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, stated that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has achieved globally recognized success. However, he emphasized that there is still a long way to go and called for all relevant institutions and society to continue supporting the initiative.
Launched in 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative was incorporated into major United Nations resolutions in 2016, gaining global recognition. Over the past 12 years, a period of significant transformation, developing countries, particularly China, have made substantial advancements in technology and infrastructure, adhering to the principles of mutual benefit and cooperation.
Chen Zhongyi highlighted the numerous tangible outcomes of the Belt and Road Initiative. To date, China has signed over 200 cooperation agreements with more than 150 countries and 30 international organizations. Citing the automotive sector as an example, Chen noted that in 2024, China’s automobile exports to Belt and Road partner countries surpassed $136 billion, accounting for 58.2% of the nation’s total automotive exports.
The Belt and Road Initiative is not only about infrastructure projects but also serves as a platform for strengthening cultural and economic ties. However, the initiative faces various challenges, including geopolitical risks. Chen stressed the importance of maintaining equality and mutual benefit among participating countries to ensure sustainable cooperation. He also pointed out that gaps within the Belt and Road framework need to be addressed, advocating for a more refined and systematic approach to collaboration.
