Representatives from UN agencies in Laos visited the China-Laos Railway to observe its contributions to regional connectivity, improved livelihoods, and sustainable development. Invited by the Chinese Ambassador to Laos, Fang Hong, nearly 20 representatives from 10 UN organizations—including the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO)—boarded a train at Vientiane Station and toured key locations such as Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang.
During the visit, the delegation received detailed briefings on infrastructure, freight and passenger operations, safety measures, and staff training. The UN representatives praised the railway’s positive impact on Laos’ social and economic development, noting its role in enhancing travel convenience, creating opportunities for youth employment, and boosting tourism. UN Resident Coordinator in Laos Bakhodir Burkhanov emphasized the railway’s significance in improving transportation infrastructure and expressed interest in future cooperation to support local development.
