The AKWABA Roundabout Redevelopment Project, located in Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d’Ivoire, was officially inaugurated on March 19. Constructed by the Chinese China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), the project is considered a significant step in improving the country’s transportation infrastructure. The opening ceremony was attended by Côte d’Ivoire’s Vice President Tiemoko Meyliet Koné, representatives from the World Bank, and officials from various Chinese companies operating in the country.
In his speech at the ceremony, Vice President Koné emphasized that the high-quality and timely completion of the AKWABA Roundabout Project demonstrated CHEC’s excellent project management capabilities. He praised the Chinese company for delivering the project on schedule and highlighted the positive impact of employing a large number of local workers during construction. Koné also expressed hope that CHEC would participate in more projects in Côte d’Ivoire, contributing further to the country’s development.
Wang Guangsheng, General Manager of CHEC’s West Africa Region, stated that the company would continue to focus on localized development and advance high-standard infrastructure projects to further strengthen China-Côte d’Ivoire cooperation. The project is a key part of Côte d’Ivoire’s 2021-2025 National Development Plan and is located at the intersection of Abidjan’s city center, the Grand-Bassam highway, the airport road, and the port access road. With over 170,000 vehicles passing through daily, the improvements aim to enhance traffic flow and make transportation safer.
This initiative stands as a major example of Côte d’Ivoire’s efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure and serves as a tangible demonstration of the growing infrastructure cooperation between China and West African nations.
