Located within South Africa, Lesotho is a mountainous country where transportation has long been a challenge. The Mose Highway Project, supported under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), marks a significant step in addressing this issue. Built by the Chinese Qingjian Group, this 91-kilometer road connects the Ha Mpiti and Sehlabathebe regions in the country’s south.
Lesotho’s Prime Minister Matekane emphasized that the completion of the road is a major achievement for the country, highlighting its substantial contributions to infrastructure development and tourism promotion. Previously narrow and rocky roads have now been transformed into a two-lane asphalt highway, facilitating local transportation, boosting trade, and increasing the number of tourists. In particular, Sehlabathebe National Park has begun attracting more visitors.
The construction of the Mose Highway took over five years due to the region’s challenging geographical conditions. With elevations reaching up to 2,600 meters, sharp curves, and mountainous terrain, the project faced numerous difficulties. However, Chinese engineers and local workers collaborated to complete the road. During construction, more than 1,500 people were employed, and over 300 technical personnel were trained. Following the project’s completion, many local workers have continued to be involved in the road’s maintenance.
In recent years, several infrastructure projects have been implemented in Lesotho under the Belt and Road Initiative. Investments such as the Parliament building and national conference center in Maseru, new hospitals, and solar power plants have emerged as key examples of China-Lesotho cooperation. Lesotho’s Ambassador to China, Kenneth Rapalai, stated: “The Belt and Road Initiative presents a great opportunity for countries struggling with infrastructure deficits. Through these projects, African nations like Lesotho are taking significant steps toward economic growth and development.”
More than just a transportation project, the Mose Highway serves as a concrete example of how the Belt and Road Initiative is bringing tangible benefits to Africa.
