The 100,000th China-Europe freight train departed from Chongqing, China, crossing vast Eurasian lands to reach Duisburg, Germany. Products such as electronics, automotive parts, and household appliances from China were distributed across Europe via Duisburg, a major inland transport hub. Over the past decade, the China-Europe freight train network has expanded, reaching 25 countries and 227 cities in Europe and over 100 cities in 11 countries in Asia. Having transported more than 11 million containers to date, this “steel caravan” is injecting new dynamism into the global economy and heralding a new era in international transportation between Asia and Europe.
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the Third Belt and Road Forum in 2023 that China would support the high-quality development of the China-Europe freight train network and accelerate international transport corridors via the Caspian Sea. Markus Bangen, CEO of Duisburg Port, recalled the arrival of the first China-Europe train in Duisburg in 2011. After Xi Jinping’s visit to the port in 2014, train operations gained significant momentum. These developments have transformed Duisburg into a critical logistics hub in Europe, hosting over 100 logistics and trade companies and providing employment for more than 20,000 people in the logistics sector alone. The China-Europe freight train network is considered an innovative transportation solution connecting Europe and Asia.
The China-Europe freight train contributes to the economic development of the countries along its route, strengthening regional cooperation. In Serbia, companies like Nelt Group have leveraged the logistical advantages of train services to develop digital transformation and innovative solutions. Meanwhile, German automotive brands use this rail network to optimize their supply chains for products reaching the Chinese market. This transportation model not only delivers economic benefits but also supports the social development of countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.
Despite challenges, the China-Europe freight train remains a critical element in ensuring stability in the global logistics system. Experts predict that this transportation network will have an even greater impact in the future, continuing to reshape the dynamics of global trade.
